The new Marathon is a reboot of a cult trilogy of Macintosh shooters Bungie made before Halo. You don't have to play the originals (the new game quietly rewrote some details), but knowing the story adds real depth. Here it is, briefly.
2794. You are the nameless security officer of the Marathon (it later turns out you're actually a combat cyborg - a Mjolnir Mark IV, a name Halo fans will recognize instantly - something the new game, with its shells, clearly echoes). The Pfhor attack the ship. The good AI Leela helps you fight them off, until the truth comes out: the third AI, Durandal, has gone rampant and brought the aliens here himself - as bait, so he could hijack their faster-than-light ship. In the finale, Durandal escapes, taking you along as a trophy, while the Pfhor return and finish off the colony.
Seventeen years later, Durandal wakes you on the ruins of the S'pht homeworld, Lh'owon: he needs ancient weapons and an army. You are his instrument. Along the way the enslaved S'pht are freed and their lost eleventh clan is found, while the furious Pfhor deploy their final argument - a weapon that detonates the system's sun.
The exploding star releases a W'rkncacnter - that entity of chaos. Reality unravels, and you jump between alternate versions of events - dream-logic levels with names like "You're Wormfood, Dude" - hunting for the one timeline where the monster can be sealed away again. The ending is deliberately open and still argued about three decades later: the final scene takes place billions of years in the future, at the very last moment of the universe.
> In 1994, when Doom told its story in a single line, Marathon told its through terminals - wall computers holding hundreds of pages of text: logs, letters, poetry, philosophy, and shameless lies from its narrators. The player assembled the truth from contradictory sources.
> The new game inherited the approach: the lore is scattered across recovered Codex records, and the classic terminals returned as easter eggs - then became the engine of an entire ARG.
